Dr Don A Hempson III
Associate Vice President for International Affairs
Dr. Don Hempson is Associate Vice President for International Affairs at Virginia Tech. As part of the Vice President for Outreach and International Affairs (OIA) leadership group, he is charged with implementing the university’s global engagement strategies which includes developing internal and external linkages that build high-impact and sustainable partnerships, advancing international experiences for students, globalizing research opportunities for faculty, and internationalizing the curriculum and campus. The Associate Vice President oversees a portfolio that includes the Global Education Office (GEO), Language and Culture Institute (LCI), International Support Services (ISS), the Center for International Research, Education, and Development (CIRED), and the university’s overseas education and research centers in Europe, South America, and India.
In a career that has spanned engineering, research, and international higher education programming, Don has implemented pioneering lean manufacturing initiatives, spearheaded innovative supply chain management solutions, published research-driven studies examining the influence of business-state relations on foreign investment in transitioning overseas markets, taught courses on cultural diplomacy and international peacekeeping, and been invited to speak on topics as diverse as foreign direct investment of U.S. businesses in Central and Eastern Europe, industrial tourism, and globalizing engineering curricula.
Dr. Hempson holds a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, a Master’s degree with Distinction from DePaul University, and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
